History

Christ Presbyterian Church of Huntington Beach was organized on April 4, 1965, meeting at the Joseph Perry Elementary School. The property at Magnolia, just south of Adams, was soon selected as the permanent site for the church. The buildings were completed and worship began here in early 1967.

Gilbert Allen was the first pastor of the church. Social action was the hallmark of his ministry. One of the projects developed while he was pastor was a Teen Center located in an old railroad station on the then Holly Sugar property.

From the beginning, the preschool has always been an important means of outreach for CPC. The preschool has been an instrument of sharing Christ's love with the children of the community.

Making a joyful noise over the years has been the Chancel Choir. Under the guidance of the first director of music, Earl Raines, through our current minister of music, William R. Boocock, the congregation has been faithfully blessed in its worship of the Lord through song.

For sixteen years, 1969-85, Donald E. Roberts served as pastor of Christ Presbyterian Church. Members of the church and community were strengthened through his communication workshops and the healing group that was active for about ten years.

Groundbreaking for a new Christian Education wing was held in August 1980 and the building was dedicated September 27, 1981.

After Don's retirement in 1985, Kass Kassouni served as the Stated Supply at our church for a little over a year before accepting a position as part of the Presbytery Staff. Kass was a real source of strength during this time of transition.

Gary J. Watkins was called to be pastor of Christ Presbyterian Church August 1, 1987. Through Gary's leadership and the church's renewed commitment to evangelism to share the message of Christ's love and forgiveness, we have seen an exciting number of young families joining the church as well as all other age groups.

Today, we offer three sunday services, two types of worship services, a contemporary service with a Praise leader and band, and a traditional service with a dedicated and talented choir gives diversity to our worship of the Lord.

In 1990, Presbytery gifted CPC with a relocatable building which was installed on our campus for use as an Administration Building and was dedicated on July 29, 1990.

CPC continued its growth through the 1990's and saw some significant additions to the staff in 2004.  Pastor Dave Carlson came  on board to add more depth to the pastoral care team and  Pastor Johnny Smith was hired to assist with pastoral care and to teach women's bible study groups.

Also, in 2004, Jeff Ludington joined CPC to begin his ministry to college and young adults, and Dean Bobar,Teaching Assistant, initiated "Beta" and other adult Bible studies.

In 2004 we began demolition of a portion of the existing classrooms, and concrete footings were poured for our new 3 story building.

One of the main focuses in 2005 was to complete the new 3-story building that would house our preschool, Sunday School rooms for children and adults, and new administration offices on the third floor.

By the end of November the building was 90% complete and the 3rd floor offices were ready for occupancy.

2006 was a tremendous year as we settled into our new 19,000 square foot three-story building.  Another exciting event was welcoming our new Associate Pastor, Bill Welch.  Total membership at the end of 2006 was up to 628 members.
