Mark 4:1-20 | The Words of Jesus | September 20
Discussion guide
Growing as a disciple of Jesus is the process of reshaping our lives around the way, words and pace of Jesus. Discipleship is about formation not information, practice not principles, and obedience not admiration.
The words of jesus [Mark 4:1-20]
Opening Question
Think of a time when someone gave you advice that you knew was right, but you didn't act on it. What got in the way?
In the sermon, we heard that the true measure of discipleship is not exposure to Jesus' words, but rather obedience to Jesus' words. Disciples allow Jesus' words to reorder their value system.
Read Mark 4:1-20 Aloud Together
- What stood out to you from the passage?
- What stood out to you from the sermon?
- Was there an idea, story, or challenge that lingered with you after worship?
The BIG IDEA
Jesus’ parable of the soils and the sermon emphasized that everyone hears Jesus' words, but not everyone receives them. The fertile soil represents those who "hear and accept God's word" (Mark 4:20).
- What is the difference between hearing Jesus' words and accepting Jesus' words?
- Why do you think it’s possible (and common!) to know a great deal about Jesus without being transformed by his teachings?
- Where do you see that danger in yourself or in the Church today?
The HARDENED SOIL
Using his incredible story-telling skills, Jesus describes four responses to God's Word. Rather than asking which soil describes your entire life, consider which soil most reflects your current season.
The sermon described hardened hearts (the soil along the path) as those that never truly give Jesus' words a chance because they immediately object or dismiss them.
What can harden a person's heart toward God's voice?
Are there teachings of Jesus that you tend to resist, explain away, or simply dismiss? Which ones?
What is one teaching of Jesus that feels difficult for you to embrace?
The Rocky Soil
Jesus’ parable describes rocky soil as receiving Jesus enthusiastically but never allowing his words to become deeply rooted.
Why do people often confuse inspiration with transformation
What causes faith to become or remain shallow?
If you have experienced times when your enthusiasm for following Jesus faded, what led to that?
What spiritual practice(s) have or could help the roots of your faith grow deep(er)?
The thorny soil
The parable identified worry, wealth, and worldly desires as the thorns that crowd out Jesus' words and distract us from what matters most.
- Which thorn is most dangerous in your life right now: Worry? Wealth? Desires for other things?
- What good things have the potential to become distractions from Jesus?
What “secondary things” are competing for first place in your life?
The fertile soil
The sermon highlighted the meaning of the word "accept" as believing something to be true and responding accordingly. It is belief-in-action.
- Why is obedience an essential part of faith?
- How is acceptance different from agreement?
- Are there areas in your life where you currently trying to move from agreement to obedience? Explain.
Jesus says good soil produces a harvest. The sermon connected this fruit to the Fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
- What fruit do you most see growing in your life? If someone spent a week observing your life, what fruit would they notice?
- What fruit feels most lacking right now?
- How does obedience to Jesus create conditions for spiritual growth?
Practicing scripture immersion
After a time of brief quiet, complete the following two sentences:
One word of Jesus I need to stop merely hearing and start accepting is ____________.
One specific action I will take this week in response is ____________.
This week, commit to reading one chapter of Mark each day for the next 16 days. As you read, ask: What is Jesus inviting me to believe, do, or surrender?
Prayer
Jesus, make us fertile soil. Break up any hardness in our hearts, deepen our roots when faith feels shallow, and remove the thorns that compete for our attention. Give us ears not only to hear your words but hearts that accept them and lives that obey them. Through your Spirit, produce fruit in us that reflects your character and brings glory to you. Amen.
